Saturday 15 May 2010

Redcliffe's 2010 Youth Ministry Course will be held over three Saturdays between February and May. Each day is designed to provide fresh inspiration for youth workers and volunteers working in a Christian youth ministry context.

Each day includes input from expert speakers, interactive sessions, resources and plenty of opportunity to network.

Saturday 6 February: All together now… Young people and the spirituality of church life
How do you encourage young people to pray, to interact with all ages in the church, not just their youth group, and look beyond themselves to the needs of a hurting world?
Speakers include Joe Knight (24/7 prayer) and Emma Worrall (Underground, Open Doors)

Saturday 27 March: Discipleship with bite (and boots)
How do you encourage young people to get excited about (and sharing) their faith and engage with the Bible. And what are the practicalities of getting them 'out there' on mission?
Speakers include Dot Tyler (Emerging Generation), Fiona Bridges, (Urban Saints) and Mike Frith (Oscar)

Saturday 15 May: 17 again - engaging with youth culture
What's it like being a teenager today? What are the issues and pressures young people face – whether or not they have any church involvement? And what are the 'nuts and bolts' of youth work in an urban, or rural/semi rural context?
Speakers include Ian Henderson (The Message Trust) and Phil Knox (Youth for Christ)

Cost: £18 per day including buffet lunch and refreshments, £50 for all three days if booked in advance

Widow's Might

Frontier Youth Trust have an exciting new Project:

We are just about to nationally launch our new StreetSpace project to engage young people on the street and in the community and we could really do with your help to make this possible.

For the last 3 years we have been piloting StreetSpace and it has been really effective at engaging young people and exploring new ways to grow church with them. The project has been welcomed by young people, the police, councils and local Christians and we have been inundated with requests to start similar projects across the UK.

So to make StreetSpace happen nationally, please could I ask you for a small amount of time and money! In these challenging economic times, we have become very aware of the value of small things and the impact a widows mite (Luke 21) donation can make.

If you could turn on your phone and text the word MITE to 82540 it would be really appreciated. Texts cost £1.50 (plus your standard network charge) and over a pound will go directly to the StreetSpace initiative.

My second request would be to ask you to pass this email onto all your contacts, put the information in your church newsletters, on your web sites or anywhere else that you would be able to in order to help us make this dream a reality. Appreciate it.

If you would like to know how StreetSapce works and how it might be able to work with you, please drop me a line. Apologies if you get this email more than once and do let me know if you would prefer not to receive news update emails.

Many thanks and happy forthcoming advent ....

Nigel
For donations from outside the UK or for larger donations to the 'MITE' initiative, please go to: http://www.widowsmite.org.uk/ You will then be able to make a donations to FYT and pay by paypal, credit or debit card.
--

PS Please text 'mite' to 82540 to enable FYT to launch

36 StreetSpace projects working with young people

on the streets over the next 3 years. Each text costs

£1.50 plus your standard network charge for a text.

Thanks to ASBOJESUS for the cool cartoon too.

FLOSS FUNDING

County Council's FLOSS scheme enters its fourth and final year
Teenagers from across Worcestershire are being urged by the County Council to get applying for its fourth - and final year - of Funding Lots of Super Stuff (FLOSS) cash.

Grants of up to £2,500 will once again be available for 13 to 19-year-olds to apply for from November 9 until February 12, 2010.

More than £990,000 has so far been awarded to young people throughout the county since the FLOSS grant-giving scheme was launched by the council's youth support team. Details of the county-wide allocation to date is as follows:

Bromsgrove £40,653
Malvern Hills £32,509
Redditch £33,193
Worcester £37,118
Wychavon £46,700
Wyre Forest £39,053
Councillor Liz Eyre, Worcestershire County Council's Cabinet Member for Children and Young People (12-19 years), said: "This the last chance for young people in Worcestershire to make a difference to the community they live in by applying for a slice of FLOSS funding.

"Many parts of the county have already widely benefited from FLOSS and we're keen for this to be the year that we receive a wider variety of applications than ever before as it's the final year we can use this funding to turn young people's ideas into reality."

FLOSS is aimed at giving 13 to 19-year-olds the chance to provide their local area with activities and projects their peers will benefit from. The final decision as to where the money will be allocated will be made by the FLOSS Management Group, which comprises of 12 young people from around Worcestershire.

People interested in finding out more should email floss@worcestershire.gov.uk or call Pam Hill on 01905 779893 or Kirsty Fraser on 01905 827489.

Funding opportunities

A few things came up recently as potential funding sources from Funding Central.

If you're working with football teams there are funds for kit for juniors and improving goal posts.

There are funds for arts projects from the Paul Hamlyn fund and Elmley Trust.

Innovation Exchange can offer funding for work that seeks to work creatively with
Excluded young people - projects that aim to help young people that are excluded, marginalised or at risk. For example, there are currently more than 150,000 14-17 year olds not in education, employment or training.
Independent living - projects that enable disabled people to:
Have choice and control over the assistance and equipment required to go about their daily lives.
Have equal access to housing, transport, health, employment, education, and training opportunities.

Edinburgh 2010: Youth Competition!

Next year the world church will be celebrating the Centenary of the World Missionary Conference held in Edinburgh in 1910. Christians from all over the world will meet together in Edinburgh and explore different ways of "Witnessing to Christ today". In 1910 young people were not well represented at the Conference, even though it was mainly organised by student Christian organisations, so Edinburgh 2010 is setting out to be more diverse. There are already three ways that young people can participate, and for two of them there are prizes involved. Check out their site.

Youth Evangelism Fund update

Over the summer I read through the many excellent applications for the Youth Evangelism Fund and can announce that we submitted bids for over £40k which far exceeded my hopes. There are some fantastic young people out there with ingenious ideas for sharing their faith with other young people and they will be getting some money to do just that. The national panel judging the bids will be meeting in October and we should hear the news then. In Worcester we’ll be having a grand funding award evening in the Abbot’s Kitchen at the Old Palace on Friday 20th November. We’ll be showcasing the work the young people are planning to do with the money and inspiring others too.

Safeguarding Children & Vulnerable Adults

This statement from Robert Higham the Diocesan Secretary may help to clarify any questions people have regarding the Independent Safeguarding Authority

Some important information for parishes follows about the new Vetting & Barring Scheme to be administered by the Independent Safeguarding Authority.

These changes, following the lessons learned from the Soham murders, are intended to help protect our children and vulnerable adults.

You may have seen publicity in the form of packs of information sent out by the government concerning the new Vetting and Barring Scheme.

The VBS is a new scheme which is to be administered by the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA). It is being introduced in phases. The first phase begins on 12 October 2009, when additional "regulated activities" will be brought into force under the Vetting and Barring Scheme. This will significantly extend the scope of activities and workplaces covered by barring. It will be an offence for any barred person to work in regulated activities, and for any employer to employ someone he knows to be barred to work with children or vulnerable adults, either paid or voluntary. There will also be a new duty on bodies, including PCCs, to pass on information to the ISA about any individual who could be a risk to children or vulnerable adults.

There are currently discussions taking place between Archbishops Council staff and the ISA as to how to implement these changes and their effect on recruitment and safeguarding in the Church of England and the ISA has promised more specific guidance.

If you have a specific concern about someone's suitability to work with children or vulnerable adults please contact Maria Johnson, the Bishops Representative for Child Protection and Bishops Representative for Vulnerable Adults (maria.johnson@cofe-worcester.org.uk telephone 01886-853566)

As soon as we have more information we will let you know.

However, registration of individuals with the ISA for the new scheme will not start until October 2010 so there is no need for PCCs or Parish Representatives for Safeguarding to change the way they currently recruit volunteers or paid workers, including carrying out CRB checks.

(Both Child Protection training and Vulnerable Adults awareness training in 2009-2010 is available as advertised in the diocesan mailing of 21 August 2009)

Sad news

Many of you will have heard of the sad death of Tony Ballard. Members of our diocesan youth council number among his friends and many other young people within the diocese may well have benefitted from knowing this young man whom Bishop John has described as "a generous hearted boy who loved life and lived it to the full".

If you feel you need help in supporting young people who are grieving or want to direct families to places of support, consider contacting either the Child Bereavement Charity (Formerly the Child Berevement Trust) who provide pages specifically desinged for families, children and young people with leaflets you can download for young people. Mini Mediabox

Media Box have started a new strand of funding for young people producing their own creative media projects. This one is for smaller organizations (turnover under £100k) and grants can be anything from £500-£5,000. Check it out. This means they now have funding streams for small medium and large so whatever your organization size, if you are young people or are working with young people in a creative project, you can look at some funding.

Secret Millionaire Fund

If you've seen the show the Secret Millionaire, you'll be familiar with the way that people have offered money to community groups within particular localities. The Big lottery Fund and Channel 4 have now launched a new joint fund called the Secret Millionaire fund:

"The Big Lottery Fund and The Secret Millionaire have teamed up to give viewers of the programme a chance to act on the charitable inspiration fuelled by the show. Lottery funding worth £1 million has been lined up for people to apply for, or nominate projects to apply for grants of between £300 and £10,000 from the Secret Millionaire Fund.

From here you can nominate or apply for The Secret Millionaire Fund.

  • nominate a community project.

You can propose a community project or organisation you think would benefit from BIG funding. BIG will then contact the organisation to see if it is eligible to apply for this small grants scheme and send out the relevant information.
  • apply directly.

If you have an idea for a project that can bring real improvements to the lives of communities, and can pass a simple eligibility test (see information below), you can apply to Secret Millionaire Fund.

In both cases Lottery grants are awarded following an application and asseesment process which takes up to 8 weeks. For more information see the link to the right.

If your application to The Secret Millionaire Fund is successful Channel 4 (or RDF Media the production company who make the programme) might choose you for filming that will appear on the Secret Millionaire website and possibly in future editions of The Secret Millionaire. You will be asked to opt in to this at the point of application. Accepting or declining will not affect the outcome of your application."

This has over 20 short films addressing questions such as Why should we pray? What happens when we pray? And How do we pray? With wisdom from the likes of Beth and Matt Redman and R. T. Kendall. I’ve also invested in a few new books of games so as the summer sun breaks through, think about getting your young people outside! If you want some more inspiration for that why not take a look at the pages for those working with young people over at the Christians in Sport website for information about events, ideas for using sport as part of Bible Study and for free downloads.
We also now have a Playstation 2 with singstar and buzz. If you fancy trying out this resource with your youth group before investing in it for yourselves or if you just want a karaoke/quiz night as a one off, get in touch!

We now have the first few iCans. These are self-contained resource pots with everything you need to run a particular bible study, discussion, activity or worship session. Details of those now available and those that will be coming soon are on the separate flier. If you have any particular session you would like featured in these resources, please do get in touch.

We love our youthworker

The fantastic we love our youthworker charter has now launched. There are lots of resources including the wonderful Dave Walker's cartoons especially commisioned for the charter. If you are part of a church which employs a youthworker, check out their 7 point charter:

We will pray and support
We believe that our youth worker needs spiritual support in their work with young people.
We promise to pray for our youth worker and keep their needs a high priority in the church’s prayer life.

We will give space for retreat and reflection
We believe that taking time to think and pray is just as essential for our youth worker as organising events and meeting young people.
We promise to encourage our youth worker to use part of their schedule to give space for retreat, reflection and personal development.

We will provide ongoing training and development
We believe that learning the skills of youth work is an ongoing process and that it’s important to continually invest in professional development.
We promise to set aside time and money to provide this for our youth worker.

We will give a full day of rest each week
We believe that taking regular time off helps maintain our youth worker’s passion and energy for their work with young people.
We promise to actively encourage our youth worker to take a day away from their role each week to do something different.

We will share responsibility
We believe that having a youth worker does not release the rest of the church from our responsibilities towards young people.
We promise to encourage everyone to play a part in volunteering, praying for or supporting young people.

We will strive to be an excellent employer
We believe that it’s important to have clear structures and procedures for recruiting and employing a youth worker, and to provide supportive management structures.
We promise to follow good practice guidelines in the way we employ our youth worker.

We will celebrate and appreciate
We believe it’s vital to acknowledge what our youth worker is doing and the commitment they have made to work with young people in our church.
We promise to make sure our youth worker knows they are appreciated and we will celebrate their achievements.

I'm so pleased to see that this is finally here. All churches employing youthworkers wiull get so much more out of their youthworkers by following this.

I can almost hear my blog readers asking - what about we love our vicar/organist/sunday school teacher/curate/flower arranger/verger/chorister/warden/deacon/cleaner/worship leader/house group leader/children's worker/steward/lay reader/evangelist*?

Well perhaps this should spur us on to look at all those whom churches employ and all those who give their time for free.

TRAINING DAY CANCELLATION

It is with great regret that we give in to the weather conditions and cancel Inspire this Saturday. The school hosting us has been closed for the last two days and there are issues with the site which make it impossible for us to use it.

Please advise anyone you know that the day has been cancelled. Today I will be trying to call everyone who has booked for the day. If you were hoping for resources, please do vist our library of resources or get in touch with us at the Department for Children Youth and Education next week (01905732825) and we can send things out to you. We will be running the day later in the year and I will advise you all of the date as soon as I have it confirmed

Not to leave you without some inspiration, I am struck by that beautiful passage from Isaiah 55:

"As the rain and snow come down from above and return not again, but water the earth, bringing forth seed for sowing and bread to eat, so is my word that goes forth from my mouth. It will not return to me fruitless, but will accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the task I gave it." Isaiah 55.10-11

What words will you choose this week and what will be their purpose and fruit?

Good Childhood Enquiry

You may have heard a lot on the news yesterday about the Good Childhood Enquiry.

We've got two copies of the book based on the Good Childhood enquiry A Good Childhood: Searching for values in a Competitive Age in the diocesan children and youth library which people can borrow if they wish. If you fancy reading something a little shorter, you can visit the Children's Society page and have a look at the summary or the reports for each individual section (e.g. the study of values).

You can also have a look at the summary report or the report especially composed for children and young people with images and child-friendly language.

If you're thinking about the Children and Youth Included Award which the diocese is inviting churches to achieve, this report has a lot to say about children and young people being integrated into a whole community. It's well worth a read.

This year sees Worcester diocese getting the Youth Evangelism Fund. I have just received the briefing documents for this so will be preparing application packs and publicity over the next couple of weeks.

For those of you already thinking that this might be FOR YOU, take a look at the criteria set for those applying:

Aims
The Fund affirms projects and proposals that share the Good News of Jesus Christ in ways that make sense to young people.

Projects and proposals should:
• be creative, prayerful and culturally appropriate for young people.
• be planned and developed by young people themselves.
• demonstrate the love and justice of God practically.
• have a “local” focus - towards young people in a specific community, area, or network.
• start something new (or build on what already exists in a new way).
• build on partnership and co-operation between different churches and organisations.
• form part of a wider strategy for the Church’s mission in an area or community.
• have been well-researched, and draw on examples of good practice.

Projects and proposals should enable young people to :
• encounter the Gospel at their own pace and in their own way.
• come to participate more fully in the life of the Church, either within the existing Christian community or through a fresh expression of church.

Criteria for applications
Applications should :
• be made by young people, and developed with their active contribution and involvement.
• have clear aims and objectives, and be able to explain why this project is being suggested, what it hopes to achieve, and how.
• learn from recognised good practice. (New and radical ideas for youth evangelism will be welcome, but these will need to be carefully thought through.)
• involve careful and appropriate consultation – for example with local church leaders, diocesan specialists (particularly youth and mission/evangelism officers), and relevant authorities (such as schools, colleges, local authorities).
• be aimed at the 11 to 20 age group.
• be clear how the proposal fits into the mission strategy of the Church locally.
• fit into an overall pattern of work with young people, and show how young people who make a Christian commitment will be able to nurture and develop their faith.
• be undergirded by a sound understanding of equal opportunity issues.
• reflect and incorporate good child protection procedures.

Priority will be given to :
• evangelism in areas where the Church is weakest in its outreach to young people (for
example in deeply rural or inner urban areas, or in small and struggling churches,
or among those marginalised within society).
• projects that seek to engage with distinctive youth cultures and groupings.
• specific, time-limited projects, or provision of “seed” money to help a project get started.
• projects which involve a partnership with local churches, communities or Christian organisations.

Successful applicants will:
• normally receive only part of the total cost of the venture, depending on the circumstances of the project and its needs.
• be expected to share their insights and experiences with other groups and churches, so that lessons and good practice can be shared.
• take particular care when relating to people from non-Christian faith traditions.
• ensure that evangelism is not manipulative or aggressive, and at all times respect the freedom and integrity of young people.
• encourage the development of local creative prayer support.

Blobs on the Blog

I was chatting with some teachers recently about this great resource from Pip Wilson. There was the original Blob tree and from there, he has now developed all kinds of Blobs including the latest Blob Spirituality. These are great for using with people, young and old, to help them think about their place in a community, how they feel about themselves and their relationships with others and helps groups learn about how other members of the group feel.

The Far Forest Centre has a new website.

This is still under construction but will have more information over the next few months.

We love our Youthworker

To encourage churches to enable the best possible youthwork, Youthwork the Partnership and Amaze have put together a campaign fronted by cartoons from the fantastic Dave Walker.

You can see the launch of the campaign at Spring Harvest or head on over to the Schoolswork site to see the cartoons.

I also have a hanfdul of each cartoon postcard which I will be giving away at the children and youth leaders training event INSPIRE on Saturday 7th February.

Spring Harvest 09

Spring Harvest runs three different weeks at two different venues (Skegness & Minehead). This year they are:
