Worcester Spirit Mark

Over the last few years, Emma and I have been so pleased to see churches engaging with the Worcester Spirit Mark. This scheme helps parishes celebrate their good practice with children and youth. It seeks to help parishes identify ways in which they could improve how they reach out to children and young people and the ways they are welcomed into and included within worship and day to day activities of the church. Recently we have awarded Bronze Awards to Drakes Broughton.

The Bronze Award itself represents a set of minimum standards in children's and youth work and ask questions such as ‘Are all those who work with children and young people possess a Criminal Records Bureau Enhanced Certificate?’  For parishes which are going further in the way they include and welcome children and young people and the diocese will be awarding Silver where, for example training has been completed and Gold awards where children and young people are routinely involved in the planning and delivery of services.

Now that the scheme has been running for three years we are pleased to be able to promote these churches which are demonstrably welcoming to children and young people through our forthcoming Children and Youth Friendly Churches page of the diocesan website. All those who have achieved any level of the award will be listed as a church recommended for families looking for a church to attend. We’d love to be able to add more churches to this page so do have a look at the details of the scheme or download the Bronze award booklet. Do get in touch if you would like advice about exploring the Worcester Spirit Mark in your church.

Christmas resource

You might be interested to follow the progress of this new Christmas resource from SGM which presents the Christmas story for teens in a Japanese graphic style.

Celebrating the Kingdom

We’re hoping children and young people will be a big part of our Celebrating the Kingdom day at the Cathedral on 22nd September 10am-4pm. As part of the event I’ll be offering an MP3 led pilgrimage around the cathedral which has been made in collaboration with students from the University of Worcester. There’s also a big picnic and an all-age celebration service at 3pm.

New term, New Resources

If you have young people changing schools or heading off to university there are some resources that might be worth checking out.

For those starting secondary school, Scripture Union have something they have perfected over the last few years called It’s your move. See their leaflet for churches or the website for more details

If your young people are older and heading off to university then Youth for Christ have produced a new Mettle  book designed for the first term at university.

The Fusion network also offer a School leaver Pack to help young Christians connect with others at their new university as well as find churches in their new home town. Fusion also offers a leaders’ pack of four sessions to run with your teens before they head off to university.

Other new resources in the diocesan WARes include Soularium from Agape International which offers a set of images for reflection which would work really well with teenagers. The pack includes fifty images and five simple exploring questions that allow the user to engage in one-on-one or group spiritual conversations with non-believers.

Lording it up!

Young people from churches in Worcester Diocese are being offered the opportunity to visit the House of Lords and meet members of the Lords as part of a group including two other diocese.

The EIGHT young people will join with others from Derby and Oxford Diocese as well as members of the Church of England Youth Council (CEYC).

We will be meeting on Tuesday 30th October (Half Term week) to plan our visit sometime in the new year.

On the day of the visit we will be leaving Worcester early and arriving at the House of Lords for lunch before viewing the afternoon session. We will then meet with some members of the Lords for a discussion and may go on to have a tour of Westminster Abbey.

Members of our Youth Council will be among the group but there are also spaces for others who would like to participate.

Please do get in touch with me as soon as possible if you have young people who would like to take part.

Revive Positivity campaign

A REMINDER that the Church of England Youth Council (CEYC) is looking for positive stories about young people for their new campaign called REVIVE which was launched at the General Synod in July. They even have a video which I’ve put on the blog here

ALM Children and Youth

Emma and I will again be training a group of Children and Youth Leader’s as part of the specialism for the Authorized Lay Ministry course on two full Saturdays on 13th October and 1st December from 9.30-4.30.

It would be really good if you could hold the people on this course in your prayers as they reflect on their work with children and young people.

We will also be gathering together all our previous ALM Children and Youth Specialists on Saturday 8th December from 11am-3pm (including lunch) If you have been part of one of our courses before please do put the date in your diary.

Worcester suburban mission seeks co-workers

Tolladine is an area in Worcester of acute multiple deprivation. Parts of it are ranked amongst the 2% most deprived in the latest government index of multiple deprivation. Around 10,000 people live there.

The Tolladine Mission in Worcester has been chosen as one of an initial group of 10 pathfinder projects funded by the Church Commissioners and Archbishops Council to ‘Develop Church Growth in Deprived Areas’. The mission hopes to do so in innovative ways which are capable of replication elsewhere.

One of the key concepts underpinning the Tolladine Mission is that it should include a group of people living closely together in the mission area, bound together by a common purpose and sharing a simple ‘rule of life’.

The mission is now inviting people to join this group.

The mission began as church initiative engaging especially with the young people of the area. (35 % of the populations are children or teenagers.) It ran a breakdancing session in place of evensong on Sundays, ran ‘Open the Book’ sessions in all the local primary schools and prayed with open church doors on Monday evenings; and the young people came and joined in – sometimes chaotically. A young congregation and a number of baptisms and confirmations followed. In the second phase it has been able to employ a Church Army missioner. Together with his family he lives in the heart of the area and is building relationships with the community through his presence there and through projects such as building a community garden. (This has provided an ‘out-of-school’ opportunity for youth in the area with learning and behavioural difficulties, giving them - perhaps for the first time - a real sense of achievement and hope.) In much that the mission does, it works closely with the local authority who has designated Tolladine an ‘Area of Highest Need’.

At the same time, the practical responses to the needs of the community have gone hand in hand with developing more accessible forms of worship and the strengthening of the spiritual growth of the existing church. The next phase of the mission involves growing the residential aspect. At present the missioner and a candidate for pioneer ministry live and work in the area. From this September, however, the mission has secured another three bedroomed house.

The mission is now looking for people to live in the house who are willing to be points of Christian witness within Tolladine, demonstrating in their lives and by their openness and hospitality the value and challenge of the Christian way of life. They will form and observe a simple ‘rule of life’, and eat and pray together.

  • They should be people who are seeking to spend some time in urban mission – at least 9 months, but ideally from two to five years, so that there will be a balance of time spans.
  • They may be men or women of any age from about 20 upwards who are prepared to live in a ‘house of sharing’.
  • They should be able to relate to young people. They should probably have, or be willing to seek, at least part-time employment, but we are able to offer rent-free living in exchange for a willingness to dedicate some of their spare time to the mission.

The mission is supported by the Diocese of Worcester, the Church Mission Society, and the Church Army. It is managed by a support group which includes the incumbents of the three local parishes, Bishop Chris Mayfield and three lay members with relevant experience. It is financially secure for at least the next four years. It has links with Mucknell Abbey.

Malvern and Worcester Youth workshop

As a local voluntary, community and faith sector organisation working in Malvern Hills and Worcester, are you interested in getting more involved in providing services as part of Worcestershire’s Early Help Strategy?

4Children is funded by the Department for Education to work with 15 local authorities over two years to explore and remove barriers experienced by local voluntary, community and faith sector organisations in this sector. It also explores how the local authority commissioning processes and perceptions contribute to this experience.

In Malvern the free workshop will be held on 3rd July 2012.

Registration is at 8.45am for a start at 9am to 1pm. (Venue to be confirmed)

In Worcester the free workshop will be held on 4th July 2012.
Registration is at 8.45am for a start at 9am to 1pm. (Venue to be confirmed)

The workshop will be participatory through a mix of activities, discussions and speakers. These events and their findings will help shape the methods of future events run by Worcestershire County Council and help local voluntary, community and faith sector organisations assess their capacity for future commissioning opportunities.

If you are interested then please book by emailing rjanes@worcestershire.gov.uk with your name, full contact details, the name of your organisation and the support it offers. Want to be part of theRoyal visit?

NOMINATIONS are still open for our search for unsung heroes to attend a special date with the Queen.

Last week newspapers across Worcestershire set out to find the unsung heroes of our local communities who could join the Queen on her Diamond Jubilee tour of the county.

They have secured agreement with the organisers to reserve about 300 places at Worcester Cathedral to join an invitation-only audience for the visit of Her Majesty on July 11.

Those chosen will join the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh and other dignitaries to watch a special presentation about Worcestershire and will have a grandstand view of her unveiling a plaque to mark the momentous occasion.

Since launching the search, they have received nominations from across the county. They include all sorts of people whose actions have helped the lives of those around them. From charity fundraisers, to volunteers, teachers, carers, neighbours, youth workers, and those who have battled illness, you have been nominating your local heroes for our very special reward.

Buckingham Palace has been keen to ensure that those attending the jubilee celebrations should reflect the whole community, and the best in the community.

There’s still time to nominate your local hero. Just send in their name, address, any contact details you have on the special coupon (which you can download here), along with a ‘citation’ of four or five sentences explaining why you think they are local heroes deserving of royal recognition. You can write your ‘citation’ on a separate piece of plain paper, or email your application to roni.skye@worcesternews.co.uk.

Get your nomination to them at the address printed on the voucher by May 25 in time for us to choose the lucky 300, contact them and make the necessary arrangements.

You can post it, or e-mail it to roni.skye@worcesternews.co.uk

Let’s honour the unsung heroes of our county. Get nominating now.

So You've Been Confirmed...What Next?

Book review of Living Your Confirmation by Pete Maidment and Bishop Paul Butler

This confirmation gift book is a wonderful conversation style text bringing together the voices of a Bishop and an experienced youth worker. these two voices bring different perspectives for the intended readers who have recently been confirmed.

Echoing words used in the Anglican Confirmation service, it offers the newly confirmed some great ideas for living out their newly confirmed  faith in private devotion and in public witness. They discuss meeting with other Christians for support and community with encouraging personal stories of being part of a running club and struggling with prayer - even when you're a bishop!

The format of the book is really appealing as it is easily portable and fits nicely in the hand with vibrant purple patterns that add interest but are not so overwhelming as to distract from the text. It was reviewed by teenagers before publication and I think it will certainly appeal to teen readers as do many of the cultural references to recent movies and online prayer resources. Although coming from a predominantly evangelical stance, it also draws from the rich heritage Christian tradition throughout the centuries from Biblical texts to St Patrick's Breastplate or ancient hymns like Come Holy Ghost Our Souls Inspire and Ignatian practices from the Jesuit tradition.

This is not just a comforting text but one which also challenges readers to act  on their faith in serving others, praying for people in different areas of life and talking to others about your faith.

It also offers further resources on an attractive partner website also called Living Your Confirmation.

I would certainly recommend this to churches and families to give to teenagers who have recently been confirmed and if I were preparing a group of teenagers at my church right now I would have bought more copies already !

With an increasing number of young people suffering from depression, low self-esteem, self harm and struggling with issues of self, relationships and sexuality how do we as YFC respond?

News from the Pews

I thought it would be good to have some updates from some of the work in parishes around the diocese to give you ideas and encouragement. This term we’ve got news from Bromsgrove.

Lis Bereen from Bromsgrove tells us about how their youth group looked like it might fold and what they did in response:

“Following a meeting with the minister we took some time out to regroup and get more staff and we now have a team that is twelve strong. We have divided into teams for Creative and Media, Sport, Craft and Cookery nights and that seems to be working well although there is always a bit of crossover. Last summer the "chill-out" room had a complete makeover with input from members (your suggestion partly) and is now tastefully decorated with comfortable furniture, a carpet and a large flat-screen TV with x-box. This room is a useful multi-purpose room for other groups.

There was a lot of talk (and anxiety) about how to attract new members but I was confident that if we put on an attractive programme this would build organically. And build it did. We went from 5 to 20 in a short space of time. We currently have more girls than boys which is an easier dynamic in the group. We have kept going over the summer with regular Sunday games in the park which has been well attended by staff and members. * The training you gave us has been very helpful and I have seen leaders' confidence and competence grow steadily. The leader who heads up the team with me has been on maternity leave but now her son is 3 months old she is returning to youth group. We are delighted as she has been much missed. She has still been involved with the admin side all along.

Our two peer leaders will both be at University from October but will still join us in the holidays. We have two new 16 year olds who we hope will take on this role (one male one female) and a 20 year old female student who has already proved her worth during the summer holidays and who is joining the sports team. She is doing this as a placement as part of her college course in Access to Social Work.”

Positive for Youth

The Government has just launched its Positive for Youth campaign. The national Church of England Youth Council will be bringing something out to link in with this soon.

TEENAGE PREGNANCY – A CHALLENGE FOR OUR CHURCHES

A workshop for clergy and youth workers to raise awareness of the issues and look at ways we may address them in our parishes

Saturday 25th February 2012 from 9.30am to 3.30pm St Michael’s Church, Stourport.

It is still the official common teaching of mainstream Christian Churches that sexual intercourse belongs within a monogamous heterosexual marriage. For one of every three teenagers, the church is therefore a place where they do not feel welcome as the perceived message is one of condemnation should they face difficulties in their sexual relationships. The church has a historical role in supporting those who face a problem pregnancy and yet, in handing over our ‘Moral Welfare’ services to the State in the 20th century, we appear to be failing teenage parents in our 21st century ministry.

Although the teenage pregnancy rate declined by 12% between 1998 and 2009, it is still unacceptably high compared to the rest of Europe. This workshop therefore looks at the problems we face through the perspective of our Christian values and examines practical strategies for our ministry to young people. We welcome clergy, youth workers and lay people working with young people or with a concern for their welfare. We will have the opportunity to share good practice, engage with others working in this field and strategies and materials available to support this work.

The workshop will be facilitated by The Revd Canon Jane Fraser, a Minister in Secular Employment in this Diocese working as a trainer and consultant in the field of sexuality education. She is a qualified social worker, the author of many sex education materials and has acted as Faith Advisor to the independent Advisory Group of the Teenage Pregnancy Unit.

To book a place please email; training@cofe-worcester.org.uk; or ring 01905 732812 with your name and contact details
