Rock the Cathedral ON TOUR!

Another thing you and your young people could do is get ready for Rock the Cathedral in 2012 by getting involved in a sleep out. People from other dioceses loved our idea of Rock the Cathedral so much that they’ve decided to do one too. I’ve been talking with other Youth Officers from Gloucester and Hereford (Steve and Esther) and Gloucester are putting on Rock the Cathedral in early 2012 (Date TBC) in Gloucester Cathedral. The idea will be to have a Rock the Cathedral in Hereford after that and then back in Worcester! Gloucester are tying this in with a challenge to spend the night sleeping out during the Autumn term to raise money and awareness for a local homeless charity. So how about getting out some cardboard boxes and raising some money for St Paul’s Hostel or St Basil’s  or another local homeless charity. I’ll be putting some further guidelines about this up on the website. If you make a video or take some photos of your sponsored event they might make it onto the big screen on the night. Some of our schools will be running coaches down to Gloucester and there’ll be a van outside the cathedral selling food. Inside the cathedral there’ll be bands, circus skills, an acoustic cafĂ©, a gallery area of all kinds of activities, a homeless street display and much more! Watch out for fliers about Rock the Cathedral Gloucester  2012.

Franciscan Youth Event

Hilfield Youth Camp is a true alternative to large mainstream Christian youth events, offering young people aged 13 to 17 a chance to explore their Christian faith at Hilfield Friary in Dorset.

Organised together with the Anglican Society of Saint Francis, the radical Franciscan spirituality of following Jesus is explored through a theme and our life together in community. Because the camp is between 30 and 50 people, everyone has a chance to join in, and no one is lost in the crowd.

Guided by more experienced campers and a pastoral team, the campers themselves present aspects of the theme each day to the whole camp. In this way EVERYONE gets to participate and all are encouraged to live out these experiences in their everyday lives.

"HYC is truly an unforgettable experience, a space in a young persons pressured life where they can be themselves, discover who they really are and experience Gods love. We hope you will be able to join us and see this at work for yourself!"
Contact the Diocesan Youth Officer for booking forms and more details.

Young People Consultation Event 3rd March

On March 3rd in Sheffield the "Regenerate Summit" is happening which will involve about 150 young people aged 15- 21, both Archbishops, many Bishops (including our own Bishop John) and some Youth Practitioners.

"The Regeneration Summit is about a group of young people calling the Church of England to think seriously about how it can better resource, equip and reach young people and offering help to do so"

The web site is now up and running and there's a small window of time (Feb 14th deadline) for young people to apply to be part of the day.

YOUTH WORK SUMMIT 23rd October 2010

Youth Work Summit

23rd October 2010

The information below comes straight off the website, have a read – then, if you like the sound of this – book yourself in! I will be there, but do not let that put you off . . .

There's this idea that's been buzzing around the heads of some of us involved in youth ministry for some time, and it won't go away. It's the idea of a new kind of youth work event, created by youth workers, for youth workers.

It's the idea of breaking down old ways of doing things, and finding new ones. Of listening to a wider range of voices than ever before, from parts of the church - and the world outside it - that normally we wouldn't stop to engage with.

It's the idea of creating genuine dialogue between youth workers of all Christian traditions, who talk and pray together to shape creative responses to the challenges of twenty-first century youth ministry. It's the idea of curating a moment of genuine unity, where theology and ideology is momentarily put aside in the light of the bigger picture.

We had this idea, and we knew it was a good one. So we set out to create this new kind of event, which has led to our first Youthwork Summit, in London, and an immediate commitment to take it to other parts of the UK in the months and years to come.

We're committed to making these events different to anything you've seen before, but of course, that's easy for us to say. What we can promise - if you decide to come along - is that you'll hear lots of voices, including some you've never heard before. We can promise you'll be among friends, with whom you can have fun, share ideas, and pray. We won't have 'celebrity' speakers, hiding in a green room together; we'll just be together, sharing our hearts, and, we pray, meeting with God.

We also promise that this will be a place for new ideas - even if they're only half-formed. Perhaps by being present on the day, your insight will provide someone else's solution. Finally, we're promising a forum for discussion, where speakers will be immediately available for dialogue, and won't just talk, but also listen.

Just the way that this seems to be coming together is causing us excitement, and as we work to create a truly challenging programme, engage with technology in new ways, and of course, encourage you to be there, one thing is sure: it's going to be one special day.

So here it is - the first Youthwork Summit - our Big Idea for an event about big ideas. Why not come along for the ride as we find out where it goes?

Connect via their website, Twitter or Facebook page.

I am really excited about this event, and it would be great for lots of people from the diocese to be there – if you do book in it would be great to know and we can travel together or meet up while we are there!

Widow's Might

Frontier Youth Trust have an exciting new Project:

We are just about to nationally launch our new StreetSpace project to engage young people on the street and in the community and we could really do with your help to make this possible.

For the last 3 years we have been piloting StreetSpace and it has been really effective at engaging young people and exploring new ways to grow church with them. The project has been welcomed by young people, the police, councils and local Christians and we have been inundated with requests to start similar projects across the UK.

So to make StreetSpace happen nationally, please could I ask you for a small amount of time and money! In these challenging economic times, we have become very aware of the value of small things and the impact a widows mite (Luke 21) donation can make.

If you could turn on your phone and text the word MITE to 82540 it would be really appreciated. Texts cost £1.50 (plus your standard network charge) and over a pound will go directly to the StreetSpace initiative.

My second request would be to ask you to pass this email onto all your contacts, put the information in your church newsletters, on your web sites or anywhere else that you would be able to in order to help us make this dream a reality. Appreciate it.

If you would like to know how StreetSapce works and how it might be able to work with you, please drop me a line. Apologies if you get this email more than once and do let me know if you would prefer not to receive news update emails.

Many thanks and happy forthcoming advent ....

Nigel
For donations from outside the UK or for larger donations to the 'MITE' initiative, please go to: http://www.widowsmite.org.uk/ You will then be able to make a donations to FYT and pay by paypal, credit or debit card.

PS Please text 'mite' to 82540 to enable FYT to launch

36 StreetSpace projects working with young people

on the streets over the next 3 years. Each text costs

£1.50 plus your standard network charge for a text.

Thanks to ASBOJESUS for the cool cartoon too.
