Gap Year opportunity

YFC One Big Day

This unmissable event will be a unique window into the exciting and dynamic world of a YFC volunteer and is a must for anyone considering a gap year now or in the future. Held in both the West Midlands (20th March 2010 @ YFC, Coombswood Way, Halesowen, West Midlands B62 8BH) and Glasgow (24th April 2010 @ YFC 110 St James Rd, Glasgow G4 OPS), the BIG DAY is perfect for 15-25 year olds, family, friends, youth groups and churches. Both days run from 11am – 3 pm and lunch will be provided.

The focus of the day will be getting involved in mission in the UK or Overseas this year or in the near future through yfc one for 3,6 or 11 months. Creative arts, Sports, Youthwork and Overseas Teams will showcase the many methods volunteers use to take the good news relevantly to young people and there will be engaging workshops, drama activities, sports coaches, performances, talks and opportunities to chat with current yfc one staff and volunteers.

YFC Volunteers Support Senior manager, Beckie Allport says, “I’m really excited about the yfc one BIG DAY. It’s been an amazing success in previous years and we are thrilled to once again offer young people the chance to hear about the great opportunities that yfc one offers. I’m looking forward to what God is going to do in the lives of young people through yfc one.”

Peru Trip

I’m looking for up to 6 young people who will be aged 18-25 in August 2010 to come with me to Peru as part of our diocesan mission trip. The group will be helping build churches/ schools and there will be opportunities for running arts/music projects with local children. Those participating will need to be able to secure enough funding to pay for flights and some other expenses. If you are interested or know a young person who would be interested contact me as soon as possible to secure a place.

Christian Gap Years

Some older teens may now be thinking about what they might do before or after college/uni. If they're thinking of doing a gap year, you might like to suggest they have a look at some of the following:

Oasis 360 - a gap year with a difference.
Christian Aid
Time for God
Year for God
Careforce
Transform (with tearfund)
YWAM
Youth For Christ in the UK and Abroad
DNA
Soul Survivor
BMS

and if you think you can't afford a gap year, check out Platform2 that seeks to engage those who can't afford to jet off aroudn the world.

If a member of your congregation has had a good experience of a gap year, I would love to hear from them to share their experience with others who are considering it.

Bored this summer? Think about volunteering

For young people looking to volunteer on a gap style project but without ebough money to fund themselves should take a look at Platform 2

Platform 2 is a fantastic opportunity for 18-25 year olds from low income families to go on a free 10 week trip to a developing country to work on community led projects. It is Government funded and run by Christian Aid in collaboration with BUNAC and Islamic Relief.

Here is a video involving young people who've already responded to the scheme.

If you would like more information please check out their website on http://www.myplatform2.com/ which includes the application form, stories from volunteers on the trips at the moment and more.
